Great small size 18"x 19" x 24" XX Grade made by C.A.Taylor Trunks Works Chicago-New York. Sells-Sterling Circus was based in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Brief history below. Documented last show was in Michigan where this piece was found.

Individual photographs include:Joe Pima, Mary and Anne The Honduran Twins, Millie Long, Rico the One Man Band, Princess Wee Wee, Joe D. Kramer, Professor Gottschalk Tattoo Artist, The Keys and Joe LaFleur.

The Lindemann Brothers Circus gave its first performance in 1918. Well established by 1925, the Lindemann adopted the name Seils-Sterling, and their circus became one of the country's greatest motorized shows.
Lindemann Bros. Circus (1921 Pete, Bill and Al Lindemann proprietors). And the even earlier Yankee American Circus (1908-1920 Al, Pete and Bill Lindemann proprietors). Later titles were Sells-Sterling Circus (1922-1925), Capt. William Sells & Sterling Bros. Circus (1922-1926), Seils-Sterling (1922-1938 Al, Pete and Bill Lindemann proprietors). After 1938 no Lindemanns associated with this circus title.
In 1937 its 29-week itinerary included stops in 10 states, but the depression of the 1930s led to the end of Seils-Sterling's travels. The final performance was in Iron Mountain, Michigan, July 4, 1938. In 1965 the Lindemann brothers; Bill, Al and Pete were enshrined in the Circus Hall of Fame at Sarasota, Florida.

Death camp sketchbook found and published by the Auschwitz Memorial Museum

(Newser) – The Auschwitz Memorial Museum has published a collection of death camp sketches by a mystery inmate of Birkenau that was found stuffed in a bottle. The chilling pencil sketches of the camp, by a prisoner who signed them "MM," show children being torn from the arms of their parents, and a guard smoking a cigarette as gas chamber bodies are loaded onto a truck, reports Der Spiegel.

"These sketches are the only work of art made in Birkenau that depict exterminations," said a museum spokesman. The sketches, made in 1943, were discovered four years later near the camp's crematorium by a former prisoner working as a watchman at the site.

The artist intended the 32 sketches as a kind of documentary record, said museum officials. Truck and car license plates, badges of prisoners, guard insignias, and signs are all clearly depicted. "The author of the sketchbook hoped that someone would find his work so that it would become a witness to extermination," said an art historian. The images were published to mark this year's 70th anniversary of the beginning of gassings at Birkenau.

A superb old painting of a woman done in the 1930's-1940's WPA style, painted by Merlin Hardy 1910-1984. Hardy was born in Oakland, CA and studied for 4 years at the CSFA. In 1934 he assisted Lucien Labaudt on his Coit Tower Mural under the WPA. He then assisted Thomas Laman on the Eureka Post Office Mural. Hardy did his own WPA mural in the Fort Ord Enlisted Men's Club in Monterey. He also did murals for the Matson Line on their Luxury Ocean liners. Merlin Hardy exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exhibition 1939, The Corcoran Gallery in Wash DC, Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the San Francisco Art Association.

Tom Ardolino Dies at 56; Drummer for NRBQ for Three Decades

Tom Ardolino, a self-taught drummer who for 30 years provided the impassioned but steady pulse for NRBQ, one of the longest-lasting and most beloved rock groups never to have a Top 40 single, died on Jan. 6 in Springfield, Mass. He was 56.

His death was confirmed by an NRBQ spokeswoman. She did not specify a cause, but Mr. Ardolino had been in poor health for some time.

NRBQ (the initials stand for New Rhythm and Blues Quartet, although it was a quintet early in its existence) was known and critically praised for its freewheeling, genre-bending approach, which could embrace rockabilly one minute and avant-garde jazz the next.

Larkin was the model for the modern day shortstops. Bigger and blessed with power. Before Barry, shortstops used to be 5' 9" and were scrawny. They had a good glove, but hit 7th or 8th in the batting order. Larkin, like today's shortstops, are bigger and hit in the run producing part of the order. 2 through 5.

Bob Watt’s porch in Milwaukee’s River West neighborhood is crowded with curiosities scrounged from rummage sales. Room after room of his two-story house is stuffed with his paintings, sculptures and art books. He presides over his cramped HQ from a well-worn naugahyde easy chair. There is a din from a blaring TV, ringing telephone and box fans. He maintains an atmosphere he calls “craziness” which is elevated by frequent, colorful visitors throughout the night. Craziness reminds him of his childhood in rural Manitowoc County, Wisconsin where he and his twin brother, Raymond, were among nine children.

Born in 1925, the brothers left home at age 16 before being drafted into World War II. He was stationed in Japan, which he describes as being completely “wild.” After the war, he went to University of Wisconsin Madison and got a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He came to Milwaukee in 1951 where he worked 30 years as an exterminator and the proprietor of Rid-O-Pest. He became a poet and a local cult hero in the process.

Nationally renowned moonshiner Marvin “Popcorn”Sutton died today in Cocke County and authorities are investigating hisdeath as a possible suicide, a Cocke County official confirmed tonight.Coroner Terry Jarnagin said that an autopsy will be performed Tuesdayat the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He said adetermination as to the manner of Sutton’s death hasn’t been made yetand authorities aren’t planning on releasing further details tonight.

Sutton, 61, of Parrottsville, was soon expected to report to federalprison to serve an 18-month sentence for illegally brewing spirits andpossessing a firearm as a felon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed.Sutton spent the last three decades building a reputation as one ofthe South’s top makers of white lightning. James Rizzi Dead: Pop Artist Dies At 61

BERLIN — James Rizzi, a New York-born and based pop artist best known for his playful and childlike three-dimensional sculptures, has died. He was 61.
Rizzi's managers, Art 28 GmbH & Co. KG, based in Stuttgart, Germany, said in a statement on its website that the artist died peacefully at his studio in New York's SoHo district on Monday. They gave no cause of death.
Rizzi was born in Brooklyn and studied art at the University of Florida. He returned to New York in 1974 and first made his name as a street artist.
He became known for his bright, cartoon-like drawings and 3-D constructions. In 1996 Lufthansa commissioned him to decorate a jet with pastel stars, birds and travelers.
Rizzi developed a large international following, especially in Germany. Last year a school in Duisburg was named for him.

Helen Frankenthaler, a New York artist whose bursts of color achieved by pouring thinned paint onto canvas from coffee cans helped point art in fresh directions after the initial post-World War II explosion of Abstract Expressionism, has died. She was 83.

Frankenthaler died Tuesday after a long, unspecified illness at her home in Darien, Conn., her family announced.

Below you'll find the final tally of our 2011 community poll, where we asked you - the No Depression community - to vote for your ten favorite albums of 2011. More than 500 albums received votes this year, across about 200 submitted lists. There were plenty of surprises, with up-and-comers like Amanda Shires and Star Anna & the Laughing Dogs and lesser known acts like Jimbo Mathus receiving more than a couple of votes. You're likely to see a few who made the Top 50 that you never would have guessed.

Lady Gaga got one vote for Born This Way (hey, we never specified genre in our call for lists). Adele received quite a few (she came in at Number 81, just behind PJ Harvey). Hugh Laurie's big musical debut got a vote. Grammy nominee Linda Chorney didn't receive a single vote, which reflects a lot of the confusion in the Americana community about her inclusion in that category for this year's Grammy Awards.

Lists were split up for an initial tally by a wonderful group of devoted volunteers and some of our most frequently featured bloggers - Gillian Turnbull, Dustin Ogdin, Easy Ed, Hyperbolium, Mando Lines, Michael Bialas, Skot Nelson, Kyla Fairchild, and Kim Ruehl. Each vote was weighted based on where it fell in the person's list. For example, albums voted in the number one position received ten points; albums voted in the number 10 position received only one point. Albums listed "in no particular order" each received 5.5 points.

Kim then combined the initial tally into a masterlist, the top fifty of which you see below. The first sixteen albums on this list all received more than 100 points.

Artist Faces Jail Time over Disturbing Taxidermy

Enrique Gomez De Molina is an artist from Miami who creates bizarre sculptures, with the stuffed parts of dead animals. While taxidermy itself isn’t something new, what De Molina does is he mixes up parts from different animals to create a new one, a new species all together. The result is what some might call art, and others may find plain disturbing.For instance, one of the strange beings created by De Molina is a combination of a squirrel and a crab. The head of a squirrel and the body of the crab. Another one has the heads of two swans placed on the body of a goat. The art is all fine, but the artist himself is facing the possibility of landing in jail for no less than 5 years. He may also have to cough up $250,000 in fines. The reason – he illegally imported the body parts of endangered species, a crime that he has pleaded guilty to. He was arrested in November.

According to the police, De Molina did not obtain the permit required to import animal parts, skins and other remains. He apparently was aware that his actions were illegal. However, he went ahead and smuggled in parts are remains of cobras, hornbills, pangolins, etc. from all over the world. He asked people to wrap them in carbon paper while bringing them in. He is also charged with being in the possession of the skins of Java Kingfisher, birds of paradise and collared kingfishers.

While these sculptures might look disturbing and even seem like cruelty against animals, De Molina says that his aim is to raise awareness regarding the danger faced by a range of species. He wanted to depict the dangers of genetic engineering and human intervention. Meanwhile, he offers his pieces for sale on the internet and through exhibitions. The prices go up to $80,000. His work was recently put up at the Scope Art Fair in Miami. Two pieces were sold for a total of $100,000.

The Future Of Salvation Mountain Uncertain

The creator of a desert artwork known as Salvation Mountain has been placed in a long-term care facility in El Cajon. Now the future of the candy-colored mountain is unknown.

Leonard Knight has been building Salvation Mountain out of adobe, straw, and paint for almost 30 years. The colorful, three-story mountain with the words "God Is Love" on its crest sits in the Imperial County desert, east of San Diego.
The 80-year-old Knight has lived at the mountain since 1985, sleeping in the back of a painted pick-up truck and caring for his life's work for hours every day. I made my first pilgrimage to Salvation Mountain in 2008 and wrote about it here (starring a terrifying swarm of flies).
Earlier this month, Knight was placed in a long-term care facility in El Cajon for dementia.
Preservation Challenges
Jo Hernandez is the executive director of SPACES, an organization that helps preserve outsider art. Spaces was instrumental in saving the Watts Towers in Los Angeles.
She has been working with Knight, both in documenting his project and trying to secure its long-term future. Hernandez says without Knight’s daily attention, Salvation Mountain is in jeopardy. "It's out in the middle of the desert and with the way it is formed and the kind of materials [Knight] uses, I just don’t see any possibility that in the end, it will be able to be 'saved.'"
Hernandez is referring to the over 100,000 gallons of paint Knight has used to adorn and layer the mountain. Much of that paint has been donated by the thousands of visitors who've wanted to support Knight's desert dream.
Without attention to deteriorating areas, sun, rain, and even earthquakes will have their way with this relatively fragile mountain. There's also the issue of protecting the mountain from vandals. As of now, a rotating group of volunteers are monitoring it.
Hernandez says it's heartbreaking, but this is a very difficult preservation case. "What we’re really hoping for is that it will be able to be maintained as long as possible so that people can come and enjoy it....But it’s an ephemeral piece and hopefully we can let it die gracefully. I hate to say that, but I'm just trying to be realistic."

Hernandez says at her most optimistic, she thinks the mountain could be saved through a combination of financial support and non-profit oversight. She's working with some individuals who've helped care for Knight and the mountain over the years to establish a non-profit to work on the mountain's preservation.
The Land
One of the first steps in determining Salvation Mountain's future is figuring out who actually owns the land. One thing is certain, Knight has been officially trespassing since he began building his monument.
The parcel of desert land in the shadow of the Chocolate Mountains was first given to California by the federal government upon statehood in 1850. It was one of the "school lands," which were parcels in each township given to the state for the benefit of public education. Any proceeds from the sale of those lands would go to support public education.
The federal government took back this desert parcel during World War II for military use - resulting in the slabs that mark nearby Slab City - and it was then returned to the state in the 1960s. The distinct boundaries of what the state actually owns as of today are unknown.
Curtis Fossum is chief officer with the California State Lands Commission, which manages land for the state of California. Fossum says the state definitely owns the land neighboring Slab City is on, but he's not sure about Salvation Mountain. The state hasn't had the resources it would take to find out.
As Fossum points out, the Land Commission manages over four and a half million acres, and Salvation Mountain sits on less than one of those acres. "We are a small office. We don't have the ability to go down there and fence it off. We don't have the funding for it. But we'll be looking at those issues in the coming year."
Fossum says that if the mountain was designated a cultural resource and had to be preserved, "you'd have to have some responsible party to do it and as far as I know, no party has stepped forward to take responsibility of it and make sure it's not a problem."
Thousands of visitors come to Salvation Mountain every year. In 2002, Senator Barbara Boxer entered the mountain into the congressional record as a national treasure. PBS and the BBC have both made documentaries about Knight and his work. Even film director/actor Sean Penn featured Knight in his 2007 film “Into the Wild.”
Hernandez says groups with agendas are a threat to the mountain. Various church groups have approached Knight over the years, offering to adopt the mountain for their own missionary purposes. Knight's always refused, choosing the clarity and focus of one idea: "God is Love."
In the coming weeks, I'll be looking into why Imperial County has not wanted to manage Salvation Mountain in the past and what the county's role will be in Salvation Mountain's future.

The Antikamnia (“Opposed to Pain”) Chemical Company of St. Louis, Missouri produced several calendars (1897-1901) illustrated with “Skeleton Sketches”–chromolithographed series based on watercolors by the local physician-artist Louis Crucius. The limited edition calendars were mailed to physicians who provided business cards or letterhead correspondence as evidence of their medical standing. Antikamnia was a proprietary product consisting of acetanalid (antifebrin) combined with sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and caffeine.

Nineteenth century saw considerable growth in state-sponsored treatment of the mentally ill in the United States, and consequently the rise of asylum building. Growing populations and stress levels of American society created an intensifying frequency of mental illness. Activists for humane treatment, new therapeutic methods in Europe, and important changes in public perception created a progressive environment which fostered the establishment of many public "lunatic asylums" throughout the country. These asylums replaced cruder methods of coping with the mentally ill, such as confining them to prisons or poorhouses where they were often abused and their special needs were rarely met.Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride was an influential advocate of an asylum system based on the tenets of Moral Treatment. In his annual reports as the superintendent of the Philadelphia Hospital for the Insane and in his published treatise on asylum design and function, Dr. Kirkbride promoted a set of detailed principles that influenced the construction and operation of many American asylums built during this period. Seen by Kirkbride as active participants in therapy, the asylum buildings and their surroundings were a central component of his concept of treatment known as the Kirkbride Plan.

The most difficult task a columnist can have is to write about a universally Good Thing. Santa Claus comes to mind. Well, no, it’s not Santa Claus I am about to discuss, topical though that would be in this December cheer, but rather Murray Frum.

Mr. Frum could be defined by many aspects of his life, unfortunately all of them very good. He was born poor, sleeping on the living-room sofa behind his father’s tiny grocery shop (good). He became a dentist, married a nice Jewish girl from Niagara Falls, Barbara Rosberg (triple good), and happily played Dennis Thatcher to super-broadcaster Barbara Frum while making lots of money in real estate and giving lots away. His gift for attracting the best women was confirmed when, after Barbara died, he married the enchanting, high-achieving business executive Nancy Lockhart. Now he has written a book about an aspect of himself (dodgy) but it is sadly not for sale, thus modest and good.

Published this month, the book is titled Collecting: A Work in Progress. Frum is a very important collector of African and Oceanic art as well as fine things in general. The Art Gallery of Ontario has the Frum gallery built with his own money and choice of architects. Frum sensed that superb as Frank Gehry’s new AGO addition would be, he was not the person to design the setting for Frum’s donation of African tribal art. This in itself is an excellent lesson: great name architects often build lousy museums. The best example is Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum in Berlin, an evocative, even brilliant building but a disaster as far as creating display space and best viewed empty.

Frum writes about a world that has no rules, namely the world of collectors. The book chronicles Murray’s life in that universe, and like all tales of alternate universes, when the prose is clear and unadorned, the landscape stands revealed. The collection of reminiscences is to collecting as William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade is to film writing—a classic.

Joe Taylor is a new acquaintance of mine in Texas. He owns the Mt. Blanco Fossil Co. in Crosbyton, Texas. Before he became a paleontologist he went to LA to study painting and got a gig painting album cover billboard signs for retail stores like Peaches Records. Joe wants to sell this entire collection which is why I am posting it here. Just trying to help a brother out. Click here for the fossil company website. Tim McGraw's sobriety is a work in progress

In this interview Tim states "When I first started, I was really nervous. You could hear my voice quiver. So I started drinking a bit and that helped. A lot of entertainers have a few drinks before going onstage and don't overdo it. Me, it turned into a bigger habit. But I stopped that. I was getting older, and I was thinking about my kids," he says. He adds that getting sober has been a work in progress three or four years, but he has been completely done for over a year. "I think I'm more comfortable now. I can feel a real connection with the audience that maybe I was masking before."

The Art of Saul Lishinsky
The artist Saul Lishinsky was born in 1922 in the USA from Russian Jewish immigrant parents. In the early part of his career he worked for the Federal Arts Project of the WPA. He had many shows in New York City, the last one at the Westbeth Gallery in 2006. The artist Raphael Soyer said of Lishinsky: "What impresses me about Saul Lishinsky's work is his awareness of our time-its artistic complexities, its dynamics and aesthetics. His interest in, and his understanding of the many trends in art today are reflected in his work which is fresh, colorful, personal and imaginative." Lishinsky still lives in NYC today. Lishinsky closed his studio at Westbeth in 2008.
